Almost Perfection
Just had this for the first time and it was goddam delicious. Like something an Italian grandma would make.
However, the recommended 1.5 cups of boiling water is WAY too much. I’m always cautious of FDF companies’ recommended amount of water, and I always hold back a half cup (thinking I can add after the fact if needed - but you can’t take away).
This thing was soup all the way into 15 mins of hydrating, and I only used 1.25 cups of water of the 1.5 they suggest.
Please modify the language on the packaging. 1 cup of water would make this a creamy ass bag of Italian goodness.
As is, it’s delicious soup.

Concur with Jolly
Delicious meals...always looking forward to dinner time when out on an adventure. Like Jolly posted, 1.5 cups of water is way too much. I'm using 1.25 and that's about perfect for me.

Tastes great
Tastes great. Use less water and it's delicious

Wow. Wow. Wow again.
This was so tasty and delicious! I love eating pasta dishes with red sauce while on trail, but it’s been a very long time since I had an Italian sausage red sauce meal. This one is phenomenal. I found the 1.5 cups of boiling water was perfect, but needed to let it reheat for 15-16 minutes. I added a cheese stick and some hot sauce and WOW, incredible! Bonus that it’s 800 calories. Will (and have) ordered more!

Freaking Amazing
I recently tried this dinner and was blown away. This has to be on the best backcountry meals I have eaten in a long time. Try this meal if you have not!!!!
Katariina Perkonoja –
The best flavour so far
I think this is the best flavour of the current selection. I'd also recommend 1-1.25cups of water.

My all time favorite
I had this 3 times on my JMT thru hike this year and enjoyed it by far to anything else I had. How companies get the water recommendation so wrong is beyond me. Maybe altitude? This was not as bad as other meals where you knew right away the water was too much but I agree that 1.5 cups is too much. I went with ~ 1.25 cups on the first meal(based on other reviews). Then I back down to a little over 1 cup and that was perfect. I used a Modified FedEx bubble envelope as warmer koozie.
Buy it you will not regret.

Tasty!
I've really never been a fan of any backpacking meal companies...until now. I find finishing this, as well as other Pinnacle meals, quite easy to do. The taste and texture (I prefer the recommended 1.5 cups of water) is enjoyable from start to finish. Not too salty. Big calories, protein, and fat will keep you satisfied and fueled up for sleep and recovery. If you're going to spend money on freeze-dried meals, spend a bit more on Pinnacle. You won't be disappointed.

Add a baguette and you’re set
This was the first meal I tried from Pinnacle. I was hiking with friends and one of the three nights we planned to all bring different pastas for a taste test—this meal won, hands down.
The third time I brought it on a trip I brought a baguette to soak up all the sauce. Perfect first night meal.

Savory Sausage Flavor ~ YUM
I agree that 1.5 cups of water results in a soup, but a delicious soup, and I enjoyed it! I imagine it would be comforting on a cold night. If you don't want it soupy it seems like people like it reduced to about 1.25 cups. I'll try that next time. Anyway, this pasta dish has a traditional homemade taste with distributive fennel-y Italian sausage. It's more flavorful than other backpacking meal pasta dishes I've had. It will definitely be part of my regular rotation.

So good I'd eat at home!
Just got back from a backpack trip and this was dinner on night one. It's by far the best backpacking meal I've had, you could tell from the depth of flavor that is is made with care. This will be my go to from now on, could even eat multiple nights in a row!
I don't tend to measure water exact for meals and pour to cover and add more after a few minutes so I can't speak to the review about too much water.

Great simmer
This was my first Pinnacle meal. Followed the simple instructions and had a great, flavorful meal. Ordering more meals from Pinnacle.

Best Meal Ever
This is not only my favorite Pinnacle meal, it is my favorite backpacking meal, period. Incredible flavors, perfect spice, it is just perfect. I never knew I could eat this well in the back country. Trust me and just get this.

Another Winner
If you like Italian, you will love this. How often do you really look forward to eating on the trail? I mean, of course you're hungry and want to eat but do you feel like you are going to have a home made meal? I didn't unless I was making something myself and that is so much work. It's so nice to be able to grab one of these meals and know you are going to be so happy about what you are eating and so full too. I won't buy anything else. These are the best.

Really great tasting, as good as homemade. And I am a good cook!
This backpacking meal tastes as good as if I made it. Love the spicy kick of the sausage (but not too spicy!). I've been eating these for several backpacking trips and I like the flavors of this meal especially. Just super good! Way better than my friend's meals. Feel like I am eating home cooked food on the trail - but super easy to fix!

One of my favorites
This is probably in my top three Pinnacle meals (favorite being the peanut curry). The flavor is spot on and it rehydrated perfectly.
Lucas –
The best
These guys make amazing food and this one is my favorite. Cut back on the water just a tad.

First time with dehydrated meals
Great product. Every other brand I have tried since my first Pinnacle bag in 2024 pales in comparison. This is the best freeze dried food around.
Taylor Reed –
Amazing! Bring some parmesan packets from your take out pizza to add some extra flavor!
Nathan McCann –
Amazing
Recently tried this one! I was blown away how good it was.

Great
Took my son on a trip with me, and we agreed they were good.

The Best Freeze Dried Meal
I've had some bad experiences with freeze dried meals and once I found a different companies meals that I actually enjoyed, it was hard for me to ever branch out with any others.
This past year I went to Alaska an decided to try a couple Pinnacle Foods Meals to switch things up. WOW!!! The Italian Sausage and Zesty Tomato Sauce with Farfalle Pasta, and Parmesan is hands down the best freeze dried meal I've ever had.
Out of the 28 freeze dried meals I had in Alaska (14 days worth) 4 of them were Pinnacle Foods & they were the best!.. so now I can't wait for my next adventure so I can try more of them!!
Bancroft Bufe –
Delicious!
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was! A delicious hardy meal while out in the woods. By far the best backpacking meal I’ve ever had.
Hyung Kim –
I prefer using more water, actually
I had this for 3 meals during my last trip. pro-tip: bring hot red pepper flakes to make it slightly spicy and change up the flavor.
I suggest using an insulation bag to help retain heat during the cooking process. Seems I had a different experience than other reviewers. I would err on the side of using slightly more water rather than less because the pasta needs to rehydrate properly!
If you use the 1.5 cups and stir in a couple times, the noodles soak up the water and the sauce gets a better texture. just my 2 cents

Absolutely Incredible
A very special treat at the end of a day on the trail. Turned on my friends to this and we all are now fans!

Definitely My Favorite Freeze Dried Meal
I've got burned on freeze dried meals in the past. Thinking they looked good but tasted terrible. 5 years ago I found another BIG name freeze dried company and they restored my faith again in freeze dried meals. I pretty much solely used them for a while.
A couple years ago I heard good things about Pinnacle so I took the risk and tried a couple of their meals. WOW is all I've got to say. This one is no doubt the best freeze dried meal I've ever had. I will definitely be buying more Pinnacle in the future.
Seriously, I couldn't even tell it was freeze dried.
docsporseen –
Great taste!
Great tasting and filling. I used a bit too much water, but even as a "soup" it was outstanding!
wwhht –
Best FD meal ever.
And forget about it being the best FD meal; it’s just a great meal all the way around.
Doug Barton –
Especially good!
A few times a year I have this for dinner at home if I don't feel like cooking!
Peyton Govia –
Delicious
Favorite of mine and my girlfriends. Every time we take a backpacking trip we bring atleast one each. Better than most restaurants and perfect for refueling my energy after a long trek. Will recommend this to anyone who’s looking to get an easy and tasty meal.
Skyler Fox –
Awesome
My favorite mre from them by far!
mymoonherocean –
This is my favorite on the Pinnacle Foods meals.
Seriously fantastic for a camp meal. Makes me look forward to my next trip even more.
Robert Ertz –
Too good.
Honestly it's near restaurant quality!
Micah Mills –
Flavorful
Love this one. Very flavorful and full of protein to keep me going. Spiced right and I don’t get sick of eating it multiple times a trip.
Sebastian Rodriguez –
Love it
Delicious. Better than my own cooking that hasn't been freeze dried. The one issue I had was the bottom of the bag started leaking a bit but I blame myself as I was using it to warm myself up as the food rehydrated and moved the bag a lot more than normally.
Ryan Balas –
Incredible
You will literally think that you are in a five star Italian restaurant!
steve bell –
ordering it again
we both enjoyed it.

Best out of all
This is the winner winner sausage dinner. Amazing taste, I like this one more then all of the other selections.
Skyler Hardy –
The best Backpacking meal I have found!
I have slept on many mountains and ate many freezedried meals, even roasted spam on a Backcountry campfire. This takes the cake and is by far one of my favorites every!

So So Good
This was easily one of the best freeze dried meals I've had. Even if I wasn't on the trail I would honestly be happy eating this. You can't really go wrong with Pinnacle meals. With all freeze dried meals, I always add less water and let it sit longer than recommended.
Todd Roat –
Super flavorful and satisfying.
Really is like homemade. It is so much better than other meals; really is like homemade. I recommend rehydrating for much longer if you can stand it. I always do like 20-25 minutes and top off with a little more hot water just before eating since all the water gets absorbed and I want a little juiciness.
adamzeck –
Perfection!
If I served this at home, my family would think I made it from scratch! Can I help with your distribution? More people need to know about and have access to buying this product.

Mama Mia!
I'm a sucker for pasta, sausage and red sauce! After a long day in the Arkansas Wilderness this meal hit the spot and tastes just like you are at a fine Italian restaurant.
Jeff Meyers –
Simply delicious, but a little heat for kids
It’s a great meal for adults, a little spicy for kids and teens. But it’s delicious otherwise.
A vodka sauce version of this pasta would be amazing!
Willis Stephenson –
Friends loved it, too
After trying this previously on a solo trip, I recently took along 2 bags to prepare for friends...all agreed: the best dehydrated meal ever. I used the 1.25 cups recommended, and was perfect.
tedesco.alex –
Amazing
This pasta tastes amazing! The only thing I may do next time is use SLIGHTLY less water so it’s a little less watery. That being said, I’ve ordered more because it’s so delicious!

BEST ITALIAN DINNER ON TRAIL
Tastes like a home-cooked meal! Very hearty! Enjoy the portion sizes of Pinnacle Foods and the nutrition that these offer. Best freeze dried meals on the market!
Jim Buti –
Fantastic Goodness
My wife and I bought some of these and tried one during a day hike. It is the best tasting freeze dried food we've ever had in our opinion.
Nice to have a hot meal on a cold day on the mountain. Please produce this one for eternity! Its great!
R Behringer –
Very Tasty
This tasted so great after a ~marathon distance in the Atacama desert. Definitely a winner.
David Harakal –
Great camping meal
I enjoyed all of the meals that I purchased

Like Italy in my mouth
This meal was amaz-balls! I tried out two Pinnacle meals on a three-day circumvention of Mount Adams with two friends, and the team voted that I had the best freeze-dried dinner on both nights.
I always used to avoid freeze-dried meals because most of them tasted like penitentiary rations, and it was easier to cook something from scratch. This meal tasted like I made it at home - there is really nothing I would change about it.
It's hard to do but definitely wait for the recommended hydrate time or longer. Some of the sausage bits take a while to rehydrate. It's well worth the wait though! So fantastic, I want to have some around the house for the apocalypse.

OMG!!!
Just did a 5 day trip to Algonquin and these meals were a real treat after a long day of hiking and canoeing. We tried them all and it was really hard to pick a favorite because they are all so delicious. This was my favorite so far but all of them were so good. Each meal hydrated perfectly each time. I will not be able to go back to any other dehydrated meal as it is hard to come back from that way of life 😋 Thank you Pinnacle for feeding us so well on our trip!
Bennett Miller –
Knock Out
A Mike Tyson knock out of a meal. This is a restaurant quality dinner. I agree on 1.25 cups of water though. It wasn't soupy, but I drank the sauce that remained. This meal is that good. Pinnacle is damn right.
Sam –
Top Notch
I took my 14 year old sons backpack camping and we had Pinnacle for the first time. Unbelievably good! So much so they want to eat the extra ones we have at home for regular dinners. Go a little light on the recommended water like others have stated, you can always add a little more once you open to eat it.
These will be the go to for all of our future trips!
joelpmartineau –
Definitely a keeper
Just tried this for the 1st time tonight. I'm adding this to my must haves for next year's trip. I used the 1.25 cups of H2O and let it set. Turned out well, good texture and taste. Aroma made it hard to wait for it to re-hydrate.

BACKCOUNTRY BLISS
Italian Sausage and Zesty Tomato Sauce with Farfalle Pasta, and Parmesan is by far my most favorite freeze dried meal of all time.
H –
Surprising!
This was fantastic! No mushy pasta or weirdly spicy but flavorless sauce and there was generous amounts of sausage. Recommend waiting longer than suggested for dehydration even for al dente, but this was really good.
